It may seem, too, at first glance, that Dee’s mother and sister, Maggie, in their tin-roof house and shabby clothing, are of little or no worth in "Everyday Use." The story ironically shows, under more careful thought, that the very outer characteristics which deem Dee the more valuable character are the ones which prove that the mother and Maggie have the more powerful inner worth. In the beginning of the story, Dee is portrayed to be more physically valuable than her mother and Maggie. Dee’s outfit reeks of a money-based society, much different from that of her heritage. Dee wears "A dress down to the ground...There are yellows and oranges enough to throw back the light of the sun. Earrings, too, gold and hanging down to her shoulders" (Walker 1151). Dee’s mother even reflects on her oldest daughter’s full figure and nice hair(1150). The mother and Maggie, on the other hand, are given an air of simplicity and unattractiveness. The mother is described as a large, big-boned man-worker whose usual attire consists of overalls and flannel nightgowns. Maggie, referred to as a "lame animal," is thin and shabbily dressed(1150). From the vivid description of Dee and rather bland ones of the mother and Maggie, it may be readily assumed that Dee is of much higher extrinsic value than her family members. Facing serious charges, suspended from the force and rejected by hi s friends and colleagues, including Roenick’s widow, a frustrated Roman storms into Niebaum’s office and, in the ensuing chaos, take Niebaum’s and several others hostage, including Niebaum’s administrative assistant Maggie (Siobhan Fallon), police commander Grant Frost (Ron Rifkin), and two-bit con man Rudy Timmons(Paul Giamatti).With the building evacuated and placed under siege by police and the FBI, Roman issues his conditions, which include finding Roenick’s informant and summoning police Lt. Chris Sabian (Kevin Spacey), another top negotiator. Sabian, who has been trying rather unsuccessfully to negotiate peace between his sulking wife (Mary Page Keller) and cheeky daughter (Mulrooney), arrives on the scene. Roman and Sabian have only met once, briefly and know each other through reputation, but Roman wants Sabian because he is from another ide of the city, unconnected to the mentioned fund matter, and should be one of the people Roman can tru st. Sabian soon find himself in a cat and a mouse duel with Roman and a dispute over authority between him, the local caps, and the feds, who disagree over jurisdiction and tactics. Roman of course know every trick in the book, and the besiegers are hard pressed to find out what is going on in the room with the hostages, since he blocks the entrances for ventilation units and destroys the security cameras and other surveillance devices.To make things more complicated, Roman is convinced that â€Å"they† (his former colleagues) are out to kill him and it is hard for others (and viewers) to discern whether Roman’s belief is based on well-founded suspicious or groundless paranoia. While Sabian tries to come up with a solution, Roman, with the help of Timmons and Maggie, gets into Niebaum’s computer and discovers recordings of wiretaps, including with his last conversation with Roenick. He discovers that Roenick himself was the actual informant and has passed his ev idence on to the IAD.Niebaum admits that he investigated the embezzlement, but then took bribes from the fraudsters. Niebaum implicates many of Roman’s squad-mates in the conspiracy, but does not know who the ringleader is. Before he can reveal where he has hidden the evidence, Roman’s squad-mates (who overhead his confession) prematurely attack and kill Niebaum. When it becomes apparent that Sabian and the police have lost control of the situation, the FBI relieve Sabian and order a full-on assault. Sabian runs into the building to try to save Roman and the hostage.Roman and Sabian argue over who fired first and struggle over a weapon, only to have Roman show Sabian that HBT team member, Scott, was not really shot another bluff to make everyone believe Roman could kill all the hostages. Sabian has come to believe Roman has a case and gives him a chance to prove his innocence. Prior to the impending FBI SWAT attack, he and Roman devise a plan. Roman is able to sneak ou t of the building during the assault by wearing a confiscated HBT uniform.They proceed to Niebaum’s house, where they try to find the evidence, but are then attack by Frost, one of the former hostages, and three other members of Roman’s old squad who reveal themselves as the fraudsters and Roenick’s killers. In the course of the confrontation, Sabian suddenly shoots Roman and tells Frost that he just killed Roman, a cop, so he (Sabian) is now a dirty cop and then offers to destroy the evidence in return for the piece of the pie.Frost agrees and effectively makes a full admission to his crimes, but when he leaves the house, he finds the area surrounded by police who have overheard his confession via Sabian’s radio that Roman had. Sabian had bluffed that he had killed Roman while Roman had actually broadcasted Sabian’s and Frost’s conversation. Humiliated, Frost attempt to shoot himself, but Beck quickly shoot his arm and the police seize him. Every little girl dreams to be beautiful like a princess. Today’s children’s beauty pageants are prejudicial to a child’s development. These pageants can lead to low self-esteem and poor body image. I believe parents should not pressure these children to participate in these type of events. These beauty pageants overly expose little girls, that can eventually lead to a sex offender’s interest. Not only do these problems contribute to sexualization, these children are taught to be rewarded for their looks and appearance, not their personality. It is not right for a childhood to be taken over by superficiality. Kids should not be wearing make-up or worrying about their appearance for a pageant at such a young age. Child beauty pageants are contests judging on poise, looks and confidence. A certain argument supporting these beauty pageants is often used that pageants promote self-esteem in children. This argument only works if you are the winner of the pagean t, self-esteem would not be boosted if you lose. Take note not only of the time, effort, and money wasted. The child would feel sad that she was not good enough for the judges. Pageants can appear to be teaching children to be confident, how to handle themselves and dress appropriately, and can help them make friends as well. But in pageants, confidence is not boosted, self-esteem suffers and the way children act, showing themselves off and valuing their appearance, is not the person they should learn to be. When constantly being compared to others, being judged on how pretty they are, their self-esteem negatively is affected when losing in a competition. â€Å"Winning is very important, said 9- year old Brooke McClung, who added that when she doesn’t win she feels sad.†(canning). Beauty contests are based on looks, and with her mother’s expectations, it is no wonder why McClung feels sad and disappointed in herself. â€Å"I should’ve done better, I should have done better. This four-year-old girl has been doing pageants for her whole short life. â€Å"Wood said she can afford the $70,000 she spent on these pageants, what’s the benefit? You can only regain the money by winning. Eden’s mother claims she affords pageants, some families are going in debt because of the expenses. â€Å"Pageants officials admit some families have gone into debt, even paying entry fees before paying rent.† Parents are consumed in these pageants and are forgetting they have a family that needs a place to live and dedication from their moms. Should a child really be learning the desire to win a contest with minimal benefits are more important than having a place to live? Issues with the child beauty pageants is that some participants are not even interested in it, it’s the parent’s choice. Some children are too young to make their own decisions, therefore too young to make to be exploiting their bodies, others participate because of the pressure from their parents. Will she be entering anymore? â€Å"Yes, she pauses, a touch uncertainly, if my mummy told me to.† Perfect example of a parent pressuring their child into these competitions. Everything about a pageant is promoting superficiality. Why would we want to accelerate the process and pressure the children before even finishing primary school? Children should grow up learning that personality and intelligence are most important, not appearance.
